FAQ

Listed below are useful FAQs and some commonly asked questions about MAX® Mouthguards...
Q - WHO SHOULD WEAR A MOUTHGUARD?
Every athlete that partakes in a contact sport should wear a proper fitting mouthguard. This mouthguard will cover the upper teeth and will cushion a blow to the face, thereby minimizing the risk of fractures of the teeth and soft tissue damage. The Academy of Sports Dentistry recommends the use of custom fitted mouthguards, like the ones made by MAX®. These mouthguards have a superior fit, quality and comfort.
Q - HOW LONG DOES A MOUTHGUARD LAST?
All mouthguards should last at least one season, but regular checks for tears, distortion or bite-through should be done. Factors such as primary tooth loss, growth and frequency of use will affect the fit and life span of the mouthguard. In kids up to approximate age 13 years, mouthguards will need replacement each year. Our mouthguards are custom fitted and in kids of this age, the shape of the mouth changes quite appreciably each year. The mouthguard will therefore not fit as precise the next season. In players of 14 years and older, the mouthguard should last a couple of seasons depending on wear rate.
Q - AT WHAT AGE WOULD A CHILD NEED TO START WEARING A MOUTHGUARD?
As soon as the upper permanent incisor teeth has erupted, the child is old enough for a mouthguard.
Q - WHAT IF A CHILD HAS LOOSE OR MISSING TEETH?
It is no problem. Our technicians check each impression that gets sent to the laboratory and loose or missing teeth are ‘blocked-out’ on the stone models to allow for optimum fit.
Q - CAN CHILDREN WITH BRACES HAVE A CUSTOM FITTED MOUTHGUARD?
Absolutely. Our dentists will ‘block-out’ the braces at the impression taking stage and our laboratory will customize the mouthguard to fit over the braces. There will be sufficient space for the treating orthodontist to move the teeth during his orthodontic treatment, without compromising the fit of the mouthguard. A new mouthguard will need to be made once the braces have been removed.
Q - WHAT IF I WEAR REMOVABLE DENTURE?
This will need to be removed before an impression is taken and our technicians will thermoform the mouthguard accordingly. It is strongly advised that loose appliances like dentures be removed before partaking in sporting activities.

The recommended retail price, including Laboratory and Dentist costs, for a MAX® Mouthguard is:
